The small exertion seemed to reawaken the rest of his nerves, closing the gap between his mind and body that his subconscious had been desperate to separate. The impact of realization was too much. Half-shapen memories bobbed to the surface, dark and damp and crushing. Neil’s air supply pinched off at the throat. The next breath he tried to pull scraped the inside of his lungs like poison.
