An ambulance thundered past them, sirens blaring. Before he had time to react, Mitobe’s hands were clamped over his ears, warm, solid. He squeezed his eyes shut and waited for the noise to fade.
“Thanks.”
In lieu of a response, Mitobe pulled him in gently. Exhausted, Koga half-stumbled into the hug, jaw knocking against his chest. The eclipse of moths now turned rabid, he curled his fingers into Mitobe’s jacket and watched the last of the orange glow fade from his tanned skin. Mitobe smelled like deodorant and salt; his eyes suddenly welled up.

“I can’t help but think that our roles have been reversed. Now you’re the one telling me about Kyouko.”
“Well, you’ve got to get the news from someone, haven’t you?” He rested his head on his hand, pressing the phone closer to his ear. He didn’t realise how much he would miss these mundane interactions - talking about their day, half-listening to impassioned Kyouko rants, berating her when she used up all the cream making parfaits, driving her home after late shifts, but now he felt a pang of nostalgia.
