    Here I am promising A-Ling this damned mouse will be here when he comes back, but what are the chances it will survive? And even if it does, I am not in the market for a pet rodent. Heaven, Jiang Cheng is right. I truly am too soft on the boy.

    Jin Guangyao finds himself caring for an injured harvest mouse his nephew's pup comes across, and no one is more surprised than he is when he begins to grow undeniably attached to her; the tiny thing even comes to his aid, more than once.

    Or: the author uses a pint-sized, unsuspecting rodent as a gateway to examining both A-Yao himself and some of his most important relationships, recently deceased son included.
