Summary
Jin Guangyao, dressed in threaded gold and soft silks, takes a step forward. Jin Ling can’t breathe.
“Shushu,” he croaks out. His uncle bends and taps at one of the records on the page.
“Here,” he says, and hearing his voice for the first time in a year bowls Jin Ling over so hard he has to sit down. Jin Guangyao smiles at him—Jin Ling makes himself stare at his face, a little pale and drawn in a way he hadn’t seen in life, circles under his eyes. “It’s not in the silk trade, it’s about cotton. Your agriculture minister liked to try and sweep what he could from the top—I presume now he feels comfortable reaching for the bottom as well.”
That makes sense, Jin Ling thinks. Then: what the fuck, what the fuck, w—
He wakes up with his face stuck to paper. Fairy yips at him from her spot on his bed.
“Jiujiu was right, you are too spoiled,” he grumbles at her, and goes to shut the book. His head feels all fuzzy—he’s always unsettled when he dreams about Jin Guangyao, but this one was almost nice. Jin Ling thumbs over the corner of the page. Cotton. “Fuck,” he murmurs, and sits down again, reaching for his inkstone and paper.

Mingjue needs to be careful. He will not die in this fucking tomb under the earth. It is not his time, not yet.

If.
Guangyao said if they get out alive, don’t tell Xichen.
He doesn’t believe they’ll make it. Guangyao is legitimately concerned that they might be trapped and die before they can escape. Probably, that’s why he’s allowed so much emotion to slip through his usual mask in the last few hours: if they die, who’s to find out that anything besides banal pleasantry exists inside his vicious trap of a mind?
Well, Mingjue knows. He’s always known. And by gods, they are going to make it out of this, even if it’s just to increase that chances of him one day getting the opportunity to punch Jin Guangshan in his stupid, smug, smarmy face. Nothing as pathetic as certain death is going to get in the way of him getting that satisfaction.

There are any number of things that Lan Xichen might be about to say. He might be about to say, “A-Yao, will you cook breakfast while I bathe in the river?” But then, there is a gravity to his tone, and a flush on his cheeks. So perhaps it will be, “A-Yao, will you do that thing with your tongue?” Or even more thrillingly, “A-Yao, will you teach me how to do that thing with your tongue?”
Lan Xichen does not say any of these things. He says, “A-Yao, will you marry me? If we both survive the war, will you marry me?”

Lan Xichen proposes before the war. Somehow, through the property of transitivity, Wei Wuxian becomes Meng Yao’s problem to solve.
