Once again, he’s there—somewhere in the forest. Sometimes, it feels as if it’s getting darker each time, every night dimmer than the last. The treetops grow thicker, shrouding the light along his path. All he can do is claw at the mud, dragging himself through the haze of roots until he reaches wherever he’s supposed to go.
There’s always a destination he doesn’t understand, but one he needs.

There was a cruel ache festering in him.
The presence of his knife, hanging loosely from his belt, felt heavy.
He hadn’t gone out that day with the intention of using it, but before realising it he had found himself in a secluded spot away from camp with bad thoughts swirling through his head. Maybe this was what he had set out to do without even realising it.

Sometimes, going down, you never do reach the bottom. It's petrifying. You can go in, and in, and in, and no matter how far you go, the depth only extends with you. By the time you realize, there is already no way of reaching the surface again before you've ran out of air. Sometimes, you don't mind.

Summary
The night after they speak on the telephone from the hospital, Llewelyn lies in bed late at night and considers Carla Jean. He changes his plans, and calls Chigurh back.
Anton Chigurh cannot be negotiated with. Llewelyn Moss can talk just about anyone into just about anything. It's an immovable object/unstoppable force puzzle, and the end result is Llewelyn trying to figure out exactly how Chigurh ticks, and if there's something he wants badly enough that he's willing to change the deal.
