[AU] A detective named L finds a notebook that belongs to a shinigami named Kira.
The darkness had wings and it had form and it had shape. Black rain dripped from its shoulders and pooled at its feet. Its head, if it had one, brushed against the ceiling with a sound like dry kindling about to burst alight. It flowed and swelled and as L watched he could make out no face, just eyes red-yellow and burning. Holes in the night, from which profanity looked out. L wanted to pour it out into a teacup and drink it back like gasoline. He was omnivorous, equal opportunity. He could be predator or prey.

An important note:
The fact that Light knows how to create a small combustible in his desk drawer is impressive, but it doesn't mean he has much prior experience with those things. Certainly not enough to guarantee that if his safety measure were to activate, it wouldn’t, say, set his entire desk on fire before he had a chance to even try containing the blaze.
Light panics hard when he realizes what’s happening, then harder still when he searches through his clever honor-student mind and comes up with absolutely nothing helpful for stopping a fire that he fucking started in his own goddamn desk drawer.
Ryuk’s cackling laughter isn’t a very helpful soundtrack. Light whips around to tell him that, and—
(the last piece of the Death Note crumbles to ash)
—forgets.
