When Blake joined her first band, she was sixteen years old and had to be trimmed to fit the role. She wasn't that good of a bassist, he would say. He could find someone better, except that he wouldn't, because she was his girlfriend and he liked to indulge her. It bestows on her a niggling sense of doubt that never quite leaves her, that whispers in her ear even years later when she practices too late at night.
