Summary
The imperial court is like a bottomless ocean. No matter how good at swimming you think are, the waves have a way proving you wrong.
Lin Shu and Zhou Zishu both know this all too well. Lin Shu, son of Lin Xie, watched 70,000 loyal soldiers die in the fire and flames of Meiling with his own eyes, barely escaping with his own life after he fell into a pit of freezing snow. Zhou Zishu, son of Lin Ju, hurried back to Jinling with his mother at age 13, only to be forced to flee after witnessing her sacrifice her life for his. And who can forget the brilliant Xiao Jingyu, son of Lin Yueyao, who was forced to drink a cup of poison in the cold dungeons?
Both cousins find a place in the world after that disastrous incident. Lin Shu is accepted into Langya Hall and begins his path to recovery, while Zhou Zishu seeks aid and purpose with his family in Bei Yan, swearing into Helian Yi's bloody service way too young.
But both find themselves drawn back to the imperial court of Da Liang. Because the past isn't so easily forgotten.
