It’s not: are you leaving before I pick up Max?
He could be difficult, if he wanted. He could ask Steve to clarify, he could ask Steve if he’s ever planning to leave. He could stand up and just do it, putting them both out of their misery. One day they might be better off for it, even if the hurt is too much to stand right now. Even if it feels impossible.
“Not right now,” Eddie says, which sounds a lot like not without you.
“Okay,” Steve says, which sounds a lot like thank you.

Steve Harrington doesn't have the best memory. Turns out, getting concussions is pretty damn bad for your brain. He forgets bits and pieces of old memories that return whenever they please. There's something about Eddie Munson that he can't quite place... Until he does. It seems some apologies are in order.Time has changed them both, but deep down inside they're still the same boys from thirteen years ago. Newt’s face crumples, just a little. Thomas feels guilt in his stomach until Newt speaks. “No, I hear you. Me too.” The words, as tiny as they are, settle something in Thomas. “But we’re here, and they’d want us to be. May as well be happy—for them, yeah?”
“Yeah.” Thomas smiles at Newt. His eyes trace Newt’s jawline, the crinkle of his eyes, the bridge of his nose. When he looks at Newt, that’s all he sees—there are no ghosts concealing him. He’s too clear, too real.
Then Minho and Frypan climb up and join them, and they sit there together, their tight-knit group of Gladers, watching the camp like loyal sentinels. Everything feels right in the world, just for a moment. And Thomas can’t stop his gaze from straying to Newt, the boy in the wind.
