“The explanation, Maryse, is that Alec had better things to do than take care of a former warlock who won’t ever— won’t ever—” Magnus gasps for air, and abruptly realizes that he’s started to cry.
“Oh, Magnus,” Maryse says, and she reaches out with careful hands to cup his face, brushing away the tears. Abruptly, Magnus wonders if Alec ever had this, if Maryse had ever touched him with such maternal affection. The thought causes such a complicated riot of emotions that he immediately pulls out of her hold.
