Summary
Helen refuses to believe that the art is important enough, and the fame is enough a part of the art, that it’s necessary for Madeline to do these things.
Helen refuses to believe that the art is more important than she is.
Madeline doesn’t know which she believes is more important. What she does know is that the art cannot compromise, and Helen can. Helen could, but doesn’t. Not enough. Helen only ever offers false compromises, and then she acts like Madeline is unreasonable for not being satisfied by them.
So maybe they just don't belong together.
