    Summary

    “Talk to me, David.”

Ish looks at him over the top of his clipboard, tapping his pen against it. They’re back in the interrogation room. David’s had to duck his head to walk in through the door, earlier. He’s sitting opposite Ish, back of his chair right up against the wall.

“I’m not telling you shit,” David laughs.

Ish ignores this. “You keep trying to escape,” he says, like David doesn’t know that. “And your files state that you’re a… flight risk.”

He places his clipboard off to the side. “You can tell me what’s wrong, David. I’m not– I don’t want to hurt you more than truly necessary.”

David thinks about the infection, about the cramped interrogation room with a low ceiling, about roots spreading throughout his blood. Does he really have anything to lose?

“I miss the sky,” he starts, and Ish leans in.

Spidey giggled softly, “So if you ever have a bad dream, 4C, I want you to wake me up and tell me, okay? I want to be there to help you.”

“...Okay.” 4C couldn’t bring himself to smile fully. “Thank you, Spidey. And you, too! If you have a bad dream, we can talk it out together.”

    “Hehe… I will, 4C. I will.”

Fluixon took a measured step back. “Drop it,” he warned.

    But Saparata didn’t.

As if caught in a private fixation, he closed the distance again. Saparata was tall—taller than Fluixon had properly registered all week. Fluixon had to tilt his head back to meet his gaze, neck straining slightly.

“Or,” Saparata leaned in closer. A few strands of white hair trickled forward, brushing near Fluixon’s cheek. He smelled faintly of the ocean, briny and stinging against the nose. “Did one of them bite you?”

Fluixon is both curious and wary of the man who introduces himself as a scientist.

    Summary

“Do you know why we’re here?”

The crash of waves against the hull of the boat was the only sound that disturbed the otherwise suffocating silence. The boy’s words lingered in the air, heavy and thick, as though even the water had paused to listen.

They weren’t accusatory. They weren’t even really a question.

They were a realization—slow and creeping, like something surfacing from dark water.
On the surface, the understanding seemed calm. Almost gentle.

But the truth betrayed itself in small ways: the erratic twitch of his fingers, the restless tapping of his foot, the way his body rocked back and forth without him noticing. Beneath the fragile calm, unease churned—a thinly veiled terror barely hidden beneath the surface.

    “Punishment."

    Or

The kids are stuck in a repeating cycle within purgatory.

    Summary

Noel wondered what would have happened if he hadn’t been driving that day.

It was a damp Thursday, late in the evening. The dark sky was clear and full of countless silver stars across the horizon. Noel was driving home from a night shift at Taco Bell, and the street he was on was mostly empty—aside from the person perched on the bridge railing, that is.

Call it rude, but Noel was just planning on passing right by. This person, whoever they were, was NOT his problem, he wasn’t equipped to deal with someone who was potentially about to end their life, AND he had homework he had to do at home.

But then, as the car was zipping by, he noticed the flash of unmistakable red outside the window, and suddenly he was slamming on the brakes, which nearly made him crack his skull open on the steering wheel.

Noel threw the car in reverse and began backing up. Once he got close enough, what he thought he had seen was confirmed.

    It was Ocean.
