"You shouldn't have come here," a male voice came from behind him.
Smitty quickly spun around, hand on his revolver. A man stood at the foot of the staircase, looking up at Smitty from within the circle of the window's light. He was deathly pale. The gray shine from the dark storm outside made him appear ghostly white—lifelessly white.
A vampire.
Smitty didn't remove his hand from his revolver. "Are you the one who lives here?"
"I am," the man said. "And you have made a fatal mistake coming here."

Smitty couldn't believe what he was hearing. He'd never met someone so fiercely loyal and protective; it honestly impressed him. It was certainly a trait he was looking for in a crewmate, but...
"...Fine, then," Smitty said. "If you're so insistent on dying to protect your fellow shipwright, then I'll make it happen. I hope you don't regret this decision."
