    Summary

In mid-April, as the trees outside start to bud and bloom, she runs into Joe and Nicky in the kitchen just before sunrise.

Joe is sitting cross-legged on the counter, his hair wild and his eyes half-closed, eating a large bowl of oatmeal with one eye on the clock, and the other on Nicky, who is singing something in what sounds like Latin as he pulls things from the pantry. She cracks eggs into a pan, yawning.

Joe ducks out of the kitchen before Nile is done scrambling her eggs to pray Fajr, placing a lingering kiss on Nicky’s mouth, and a swift one on Nile’s forehead as he goes, and when Nile’s food is done she takes a plate to the table and watches Nicky work.

    Summary

So there Joe he sits, awkward, masked, and noticeably childless in a brightly decorated paediatric ward's waiting room.

He's not panicking, so he tells himself. But the longer he sits there, while in the background, children are screaming and chasing each other in the ward's playpen, the more anxious he gets. What if he's really sick? What if he's having an allergic reaction? What if–

A lollipop that appears out of nowhere in his vision derails his thought. He looks up to see a nurse in a baby blue scrub and a mask holding it.

"Helps to calm you down," he says. He's got a lilting accent and gorgeous green-grey eyes.

    "That obvious, huh?"

The nurse's eyes crinkle. "You can't stop moving your legs," he says. "Waiting can be stressful, yes?"

He must have mistaken Joe for a parent waiting for news on his child or something.

"Yeah," Joe says, going along with it.

Or, Joe doesn't believe in the soulmate, soulmark and souldbond concept. And of course the universe conspires to show him otherwise.

Or, Joe thinks he must be in some twisted sort of a gay Cinderella story.

    Summary

"How long?" the man eventually asks. He's not looking at Joe, simply regarding the floor, hands clasped loosely between his thighs.

Joe scratches his nose idly. "Six years."

The man looks up and over, surprised. "You were young."

"We met when I was twenty," Joe confirms, old sadness tugging at the corner of his mouth. “We had seven together.”

    Nodding, the man looks back to the floor. He's quiet for a long time, minutes possibly. And then;

"Seven months, for me," he says, very softly, and roughly. And oh, Joe's heart aches for him.

In a world where soulmates are predestined, life after love seems impossible. Joe and Nicky give it a go anyway.

“What’s your relationship to the patient?” the nurse asks, not looking up from her paperwork.

Keefe pauses, then settles on the closest thing he can think of, the word most adjacent to the truth. "I'm his disciple."
