Summary
“He works at Mid-Wilshire with my dad,” he whispers. “He’s a TO… or at least he was. I guess something happened and he was sent here to teach instead of training, though my father won’t tell me what. But it’s definitely a demotion, so I wouldn’t mess with him. He’s probably pissed about it and out to ruin our lives.”
Lucy chews thoughtfully on the end of her pen as she half listens, half wonders.
What could Officer Bradford have done to deserve a demotion?
And does she want to get on his bad side?
She kind of liked the spark she’d seen in him this morning, and the way he’d approached her and yelled at her had caused something warm and funny to happen in her belly.
She kind of wants to poke at him again, just to see what happens.

“Things are a little complicated with your daddy right now,” she whispers, her thumb brushing over her warm skin. “But we’re gonna figure it out. We have to. For you.”
She imagines all of the milestones — the doctor’s appointments, finding out her pants don’t fit anymore, feeling their baby kick, the baby’s birth — and she’s so fucking uninterested in doing it alone that she fumbles for her phone, firing a quick text off to Tim before laying down.

Summary
“It’s called a superfetation pregnancy and . . . it’s incredibly rare. If I remember correctly there are less than a dozen documented cases worldwide. Although it’s possible it occurs more frequently in multiple pregnancies and just goes under the radar as a normal pregnancy.” The doctor had Googled - actually Googled - the term and was reading to her from the results. She’d been as shocked as Olivia had been to see two two embryos on the monitor where a mere two weeks ago there had only been one.
“Basically you became pregnant while . . . pregnant."

Summary
Lucy offers him a small smile, strained and scared, as she licks her lips.
“I… um. I think I found the second bomb.”
Tim lurches forward but stops immediately when everyone present, everyone, screams for him to.
“TIM! No! No, stay back, baby, please,” Lucy cries, and he stops mid-step, his heart racing and his eyes wide as he watches Angela and Nyla walk around Lucy in a wide circle before they converge on him, each one wrapping their hands around his arms and holding him back from moving toward her.

Summary
After mommy falls asleep and won’t wake up, the entire world becomes very scary, very quickly for Charlotte Bradford.
She sits by mommy’s side even when her body is cold and the house is cold and she gets cold. It’s winter, and mommy normally turns the heat on for at least a few hours a day so they don’t freeze, but Charlotte is too short to reach the thermostat, so she sits there wrapped in a blanket by her mommy’s silent, motionless body.
She sits and stares.
She doesn’t eat or sleep or even go to the bathroom until there’s a knock on the door what feels like days later.

Tim Bradford has just come back from his second overseas tour when a 5-year-old girl is deposited on his doorstep after Isabel overdoses. Lucy is Charlotte's Kindergarten Teacher, and helps them slowly but surely become a family.

Summary
“She’s not mine,” he whispers, his heart shattering, but Dr. Warren doesn’t hear him.
“She’s been intubated because she was struggling to breathe on her own,” he says, handing Tim a yellow, gauze apron to don before they walk into a room full of immune compromised babies. “There will be a lot of wires and tubes, but don’t let them alarm you. She has an IV, a nasogastric feeding tube, and we’re monitoring all of her vitals. They’re still working on assessing her, but we know she’s 2 pounds, 2 ounces, and we’ve estimated her gestation to be around 30 weeks, though she’s smaller than expected due to being exposed to opioids in utero. She’s…”
Tim barely hears what Dr. Warren is saying as he pauses in the doorway to the NICU.
She’s not mine, he thinks, and even though he’s only known about this baby, Isabel’s baby, for less than two hours, he feels tears prickling in his eyes.
Isabel left eight months ago.
34 weeks.
This baby, this teeny, tiny little girl… belongs to Isabel and some other man.
