Summary
Title based on song "Take This Longing" by Leonard Cohen. This story has a splash of Shaw's epilogue and is based in the same general universe as my previous fic Once in a Lifetime (sans magical elements) and influenced by the fic Rhythm by Florance Tallis and Just You Wait by encroix.
Henry and Eliza do not reconcile at the grand opening party from Once in a Lifetime but she does patch things up with Freddy. Despite serious reservations that she chooses to ignore, she decides to become Mrs. Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Higgins is not ready to give her up.
**Now sans embarrassing and baffling typo in chapter 18 that will haunt me until my dying day!**

Sequel to Pygmalion (1938) that disregards Shaw’s sequel.
Eliza is having a quarter-life crisis, and decides she needs to sample several life options before settling on one. She tables the flower shop idea to focus on studies, and returns to Wimpole street. Henry Higgins is thrilled to have her back in any capacity, and begins to work on becoming a better human being as he quietly pines.
Given this is a sequel to the 1938 film, WWII will be a part of the plot.
***Mistakes are all mine, but I do treat this like a live document and obsessively check for flaws***

Papa Pick was devoted to her mama as well, but it wasn’t quite the same (“but it is no less profound”, her mama had patiently explained), and he’d said many times that Lillian was the rose of his life. Papa Pick was the loveliest, sweetest man to ever draw breath, and, if Lillian had to pick one thing that was vexing to her, it was the fact that she was only allowed to call him Papa in the house, and never when visitors were about. “Please, Caitlyn,” Vi whispers. The levity doesn’t last long. She’s begging, pleading, holding the glass an inch from Caitlyn’s dry, cracked lips. “I need you to—shit, I just need you. Everything’s so fucked up. I’ve come back to a world I wish I didn’t recognise, and everything’s gone. Everything and everyone. And then you, you appeared out of nowhere, like there’s still some good left in this shitty, uncaring world, and I just—please. Just a sip. For me?”
Caitlyn’s eyes focus on the still water within the glass. Vi presses the chipped rim to Caitlyn’s mouth and tilts it back, water touching her lips, and Caitlyn finally moves.
Lifting a hand, she knocks the glass across the room. It shatters into three large pieces and a thousand tiny shards.
Vi lifts her hands. She wants to curl them into fists, to beat the ground, to twist them in her hair and scream; she wants to cradle Caitlyn’s face, letting her feel the gentle warmth on the dirt covering her skin, and the skin beneath the dirt.
