Shane just looks at Ilya for a moment and he knows Shane is trying to come up with a reason to argue. But Ilya also knows this is exactly what Shane needs, really needs, and he eventually nods his head in agreement.
“Good boy,” Ilya praises and kisses Shane’s forehead.

What if Shane had a full blow breakdown after they were outed and Ilya was right there to soft Dom him back together?

“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Summary
The Boston Bears group chat had sixty-three new messages in the span of three minutes.
His coffee forgotten, Ilya swiped open the chat, scrolling quickly to find the source of the commotion. A link to The Athletic, posted by Jensen, their captain, followed by a string of exclamation points. Ilya tapped it, the headline materializing on his screen like a blow to the chest:
BREAKING: MONTREAL VOYAGEURS’ SECOND DRAFT SHANE HOLLANDER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Ilya's pulse jumped, hard and sudden in his throat. The mug slipped from his hand, not falling but landing too heavily on the counter, coffee slopping over the rim. He set it down properly, his movements mechanical, and forced himself to read the rest of the headline:
20-YEAR-OLD ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STEPPING AWAY TO PURSUE HARVARD BUSINESS DEGREE

“Ah.” Shane couldn’t quite meet his eyes as a faint blush crept across his cheeks. “Well, I wasn’t sure what the dress code would be for the party, so I laid out some options for us.”
Ilya’s heart fucking stopped.
“The… what is this, what is happening?” Ilya asked, wanting to be sure that he understood correctly.
Shane’s blush intensified as he gave Ilya a small, unsure smile.
“I don’t know Boodram very well, so I had to guess what the vibe would be. You were… you were in the shower for a long time and I was feeling anxious so I… Sorry, it’s so stupid but I just wanted to… I don’t know, show you I’m in?”
Or, what if Shane didn't leave after their fight on Boxing Day?

"You are not the only one who enjoyed it," Ilya reminds him, trailing kisses up the outside of his arm. "I am curious. About how much of this you will let me have. How much you will let me take." He makes it to Shane's neck, nips lightly at his pulse when presented with a bared throat. "It should not make me so crazy. But it does."
And Shane - Shane can't really argue with that. He knows that Ilya delights in finding Shane's sexual boundaries and seeing how far Shane will push them. He knows that he derives equal pleasure from it every single time, no matter how initially hesitant he feels.
It makes it much easier to say, "Okay, yeah."
