“I didn’t–” Law cuts himself off. It dawns on him then that he did, in fact, ask. Involving Smoker was his own express decision, however impulsively made. Bepo certainly hadn't made it for him - hell, he hadn't so much as questioned it. And he hadn't been the one to bring the rumors, either: it had been an innocuous bit of conversation Law overheard, and his traitor brain had latched onto it. Pushed to his breaking point and beyond, he'd heard Smoker's name and only thought refuge.
Fuck.

After purposely sending Issho to Dressrosa instead of someone more obedient, Smoker and Tashigi are exiled to a backwater ranch island, a punishment badly disguised as undercover work. It's boring as hell, which leaves Smoker plenty of time to think about how what happened between him and Law on Punk Hazard was probably a one-time thing. He's sort of almost convinced himself, too, when one morning, an unusual ship docks at the island's singular port.
If he listens very carefully, Smoker can hear the sound of fate laughing directly in his face.
