IN WHICH… Alice Barnes (née Cassidy) fell in love with Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes of the 107th Infantry Regiment in 1943. Likewise, Bucky Barnes fell in love with Lieutenant Alice May Cassidy of the Army Nurse Corps in 1943. Not many people know how it happened besides Steve, Peggy and Howard, or what occurred in between 1945 and 2015. Neither have thought much about it, until a night in the compound with a few drinks leads to Sam asking how the story goes. What begins as a brief explanation turns into a detailed account of how Alice and Bucky fell in love and through the odds found each other again.

Lieutenant Pete Wentz is living the dream. Pete lets his head fall back against his seat with a dull thunk, the kind of sound that barely exists out of exhaustion. The vibration hums through the car frame, steady and low, like it’s trying to remind him the world’s still here. For a fleeting moment, his vision sharpens- past the rain-smeared windshield, into the parking lot, and he can even make out the faint blue of the best buy sign in the distance. He almost laughs, something small and broken twitching at the corners of his mouth. Then, with that ghost of a smile, his eyes flutter closed.
And the night swallows him whole.
