Route 0 Spoilers.
After Shouma becomes unable to take care of the cage, it falls under Gaku's responsibility. In the middle of an internal conflict with a serial killer Gaku is considered innocent but inconsequential to discussions. This abandonment, accompanied by fear, turned into resentment and opened a door for him to recognize Eito as his only friend.
In return, Eito recognizes him as a ticket for freedom, but also realizes that there's something different to Gaku's nature as a human. -

Summary
There were a lot of things that Eito bothered with that Takumi never understood why. He recalls the days he surprised Takumi with airy kisses while hanging sheets outside, how held him tightly in bed with those freshly cleaned sheets whispering affirming words of love, the way his newly washed gloves traced his body until he touched his–
He stops himself from thinking any further. Every time he remembers Eito he feels his blood run hot to the point it throbs in pain. He doesn’t know if it's because of Eito’s cryptoglobin that is now a part of him but it feels like a virus infecting his body until there is nothing left. Why did he do all those things if he absolutely hated his guts? Why did he have to break his heart like that?
But now he will never know because his Eito is nothing more than a phantom now, forever haunting Takumi.
Takumi tries to ground himself back down to earth to stop chasing the ghosts of his past. He doesn’t need Eito’s or anybody’s help. He is Takumi Sumino and he survived being in a war for 100 days. If he could do that, he could do anything, even his own laundry.
And besides, how hard could it possibly be?
