Summary
Gon is seven years old when he loses his way in the forest behind Aunt Mito’s house. After wandering for hours he stumbles upon a young man in a clearing: a fortune teller named Killua, who is neither kind nor polite but still offers to guide Gon home. Gon, intrigued by his new friend, continues to replay their encounter even when the summer is over.
The next summer, Gon returns to search for Killua’s company. He finds him. And he continues to seek him out the next year, and the next, and the next.
Soon, all Gon can think about is going to see Killua again. Yet some things about their meetings are decidedly strange. For one, Killua never seems to remember him. He’s always wearing the same clothes. And, now that Gon is old enough to see it, he always looks a little sad…

“Who are you?” Gon demanded, though he kept his voice to a harsh whisper—he didn’t want to risk waking Mito right now. “What do you want from me?”
“Like I’d tell you my name so easily,” the stranger said, almost condescendingly. “As for what I want—you’ve killed my family’s dog, Gon Freecss. For that, you must pay.”
Now he was just confused.
“What?” Gon blurted, and winced at his volume. Continuing in a quieter voice, he said, “No. I wouldn’t kill a dog. You must be confusing me with someone else.”
“I found Mike’s body in the woods earlier and tracked the blood to this village,” the stranger replied. “You’re the talk of the town for killing him. Don’t try to deny it.”
“Wait, you mean the—the jabberwocky?”

Shen Qingqiu looked up from where he had been focused on petting the pup in his lap, blinking at Liu Qingge where the man stood at the edge of the veranda, glaring.
“A dog,” he said, brow raised, before he brought his fan up to absently cover his smirk, “You’ve seen one before, I’m sure.”
Liu Qingge frowned harder; handsome features entirely ruined by the bull-headed temper of their owner.
“Of course I have. Why is it here?”
“I don’t remember there being a prohibition on pets.”
“A pet,” Liu Qingge repeated, suspicious gaze locked on the innocent little puppy as if it would jump up and breath fire at any moment, “For you?Where did you find it?”
Liu Qingge eyed the beast distrustfully, as if he thought it’s fluffy and sweet demeanor might be part of some larger trap preying upon Shen Qingqiu’s fondness for such things.
“You worry too much, shidi,” he said, sipping at his tea and turning to watch the tranquil bamboo forest ripple in the faint breeze, “How much trouble could he be?”Or, local transmigrator saves a dog and accidentally earns the devotion of a demon king
