Wei Ying spins around in her studio chair as dramatically as she can, then gets up and stomps toward where Lan Zhan is sitting on the couch. “I know procrastination when I see it," she says. "Why won’t you just record the damn piece? Are you embarrassed or something?”
To Wei Ying’s surprise, Lan Zhan’s ears redden.
Wei Ying gasps. “Oh my god, you are. You’re embarrassed! Do you think I’ll judge you? You must know by this point how obsessed I am with your playing—”
“What?” Lan Zhan looks startled.
“What?” Wei Ying echoes. “Oh. I mean. What? Nothing. What are you talking about?”

Summary
Lan Zhan returns to the table and rustles through the pile of paper and cardboard, sets aside the paper booklet (an instruction manual, apparently) and then sees it: a gift label. In large, florid letters, it proclaims:
THIS HAS BEEN GIFTED TO YOU BY: WEI YING!!!!!!!!!!!!
followed by a second set of slightly smaller but equally florid letters:
A MESSAGE FOR YOU : HI LAN ZHAN! I SAW THIS AND THOUGHT OF YOU! I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT ;) ;) ;) <3 <3 <3 ;)
Lan Zhan drops the card like it’s burned her.

Summary
The man blinks at him and slowly swivels to look at Wei Ying unlocking the front door. He leaves the door open for the man to follow him and turns on the hallway light, picking up the brown book that they keep to note down bookings. The man closes the front door behind him and stands directly opposite Wei Ying, just staring at him.
“Sooo,” Wei Ying sounds out. “What’s your name?”
“I do not know,” the man replies in English slowly, still staring at Wei Ying.
Wei Ying blinks. Abruptly, he feels way too tired for this conversation. “Um...you don’t know your own name?”
The man shakes his head and shifts his glance down to the book in Wei Ying’s hand.
Right. Wei Ying can totally deal with this. Just some guy standing on his doorstep at night who doesn’t even know his own name. It’s fine. He’s dealt with worse.

This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta 'The Student Prince'.

::2019 note: This story was written BEFORE the TV show introduced the character of Gwaine. It's not that I can't spell, or that I'm perversely writing him out of character - I incorporated other characters from Arthurian legend (Kay, Gawain etc) into my story, and lacking prophetic abilities, my versions naturally don't mesh with the versions subsequently introduced into the show.::
