    Bookmarker's Notes

if the Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields was a beautiful story that somehow ended up for free on ao3. I love them. I love how smart they are, especially Ilya. Also, having read more than 2/3 of the books listed in the doc, this one was extra special. Sosososo good, maybe I should've savoured it a bit more but I devoured it like Shane did with Ilya's recommendations lol

Shane is traded to Boston during the hookup era, and his attempts to act normal and professional around Rozanov are a little too successful: fans start shipping him with Marleau, instead.

    Summary

It’s the most famous cold case in hockey history. Up-and-coming Russian phenom Ilya Rozanov mysteriously vanishes the summer before his rookie season. Despite extensive police work, no trace of the young superstar is ever found.

Shane Hollander remembers Ilya Rozanov. Better than most. And now, several years retired and with two highly successful hockey biographies under his belt, he’s taking a crack at the mystery that’s haunted his own career with strings of what-ifs and memories revisited so often they’ve softened like old cotton.

Perhaps now, with the long eye of perspective between him and those memories, he can unravel the short lifetime of the man poised to become his biggest rival and best kept secret. Travelling to Russia he searches for stories and the answers they hold.

If only this damn dog that’s apparently a local cryptid would stop raiding his trash cans.

It has wandered this place for years. It knows every stream, every hill, every tree. Every pale, flat face in the place of straight lines. It does not know this face.

But it remembers dark eyes and star-dots across the cheeks.
It cannot remember its own name.

    But it remembers him.

magical realism has roots in me like the forest will always have a little of its roots in ilya, so it's no surprised i fucking loved this. besides being incredibly well written and having that "book" feeling all over it, i just love reading how people can find new ways to show how deep the love between shane and ilya is. also i love this retired shane and how his feelings are explored, and i love how the internal thoughts of ilya in dog form are written.

just one of those stories that stays with you for a long time

    Summary

“Sweetheart, your pretty little head is so silly. For every photocard I make of ugly hockey men, I make two of my gorgeous, radiant, pulchritudinous boyfriend. Sometimes three.”

A smile breaks through the heated haze of Shane’s expression. “You’ve been using the thesaurus Dad got you for Christmas?”

“I will beat Yuna Hollander at Scrabble one day,” Ilya declares against Shane’s hip bone.

In the year between the Cottage and the Centaurs, Ilya misses Shane more than ever. Svetlana’s teenage cousin offers a coping method: Kpop-style Shane Hollander photocards to stare at all day long. It's a shame carrying around pictures of fellow hockey players is just not socially acceptable.

    …At least, not yet.

(AKA: Ilya's mission to desensitize the hockey world to his Hollander fanboyisms, and the NHL players that suffer for it.)

    Summary

After coming out to Rose, Shane decides he doesn't want to lie anymore, even if he isn't sure coming out will mean he gets happily ever after with Ilya. When coming out to the Voyageurs leaves him wondering what his future in Montreal might look like, he lets himself be a little selfish, he lets himself wonder if there might be somewhere else he might be happy. If Montreal wants to get rid of a generational player, he's not about to stop them, especially if it means he can get a little closer to joy.

Or: Shane Hollander leaves Montreal in search of something better.
