  1. Summary

Master of Death wasn’t merely a cute title or an empty human phrase. Death needs a master for all those pesky human interactions he can’t handle from a metaphysical plane. Collecting the Deathly Hallows is only the beginning. A true Master faces a lifetime of tasks for Death.

In other words, this is the story of one little girl growing up to become the Master of Death. And of all the adventures after that.

    Summary

“I will not apologize for speaking the truth,” the child says. “However, I regret if that truth has offended you.”

    “Jesus Christ, kid,” Jim mutters.

“I am not offended,” Spock responds, as blandly as he is able. “I was remiss in casting such hasty judgment upon your guardian.”

    ”Father,” she corrects.

    ”Your father,” he agrees.

    *****

An academy AU + Tarsus aftermath fic in which James T. Kirk ends up accidentally parentally bonded to an orphaned Vulcan child. When the father/daughter duo enroll in Star Fleet, hijinks ensue (mostly at the expense of Spock’s previously immaculate but quickly deteriorating self-control).

Winner of the 2025 Philon Award for a novel-length fic (!!!)

    Bookmarker's Notes

For a story that spends half of its time on Tarsus IV and features Spock and Kirk having to learn how to communicate, I found this film delightfully free of angst or needless conflict (nothing against angst...but sometimes you want to feel the story but not get stuck in the bad moments and I loved that I was invested but not stuck in the down moments). This story was smart and interesting, heartwarming in the found family we see with Jim's chapters and Spocks chapters include some nicely nuanced looks at Spocks relationships with his parents (this film allows you to see great things with Sarek and Amanda and also allows Spock and Sarek to have differing perspectives). I love the look at Vulcans in a way that looks at some of the xenophobia found in the film and the tug of war Spock feels with his two heritages. The latter is nicely explored through Jims adopted daughter T'Mara, who is a delightful OC who adds to the story while also allowing this to be a strong exploration of Jim, Spock, and the larger AOS (and TOS) universe. This story engaging, emotional, and lovely.

    I love this.

Its a fix-it that incorporates several AUs (and the original) into a progressing story that also features love stories. Cody is a fantastic narrator as he is trying to figure this all out. I love how this also provides character growth and a happier ending for Anakin (that feels deserved). I have enjoyed this on several rereads and it remains delightful.

    Summary

There were very few things in Harry Potter's life that he was certain of. There was one absolute certainty though; he'd felt it in his bones for as long as he could remember. He, Harry Potter, was dead. The living people around him might not believe, but the dead sure did. Oh well, it doesn't impact his life much. Besides, it's nice to get help with his schoolwork from his parents.

Absolutely delightful story -- and it holds up on multiple rereads. It's a clever premise for a retread of the series that allows different characters to shine than normal. I especially love that Harry is able to have good relationships with his parents here. But I also love that Poppy, Dobby, Hagrid, and Sirius get some serious attention and development.

The author is extremely talented and all their stories have interesting premises, focus on dogferent characters, and mame wonderful reading times. I highly recommend all of them in general. This one is my favorite for its premise, resolution, and character foci.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I found this story so absolutely enthralling to read the whole thing, in all its length, multiple times. It's a series rewrite that really focuses on characters and magic in ways that are beautiful and touching. I always love good love stories, but here it's also so satisfying that so many of these love stories aren't romantic. The whole arc is well written and engaging, building from a clearly recognizable starting place for the characters while allowing then to develop in their own ways given the cascading changes of the story.

There are many things I could praise, but a short list would focus on:
    - inter house unity where Slytherins work alongside everyone else while bringing out strengths and weaknesses of each house and of many of them being children
    - a truly frightening but creative and engaging Battle of Hogwarts (and rhe whole second war in general)
    - enough world and character building to let fantastic characters shine, including characters who often drew the short stick in Canon or fanon. Personal favorite characters who get a lot of important time and focus include Percy, Ron, Remus, and Severus (but really minor characters often get shining moments or at least ones of analysis ans understanding)
    - characters who were much grayer (of not pretty black) in the books are allowed to be heroic here, but only after they have had catalysts to change and character arcs.
    - there is no bashing of characters, even when pursuing noncanon pairings. People are given nuances and flaws. You get a sense that the author just really enjoys the world and characters and doesn't try to flanderize any of them.
    - a Harry with unusual but limited magic who is kind (which was my favorite aspect of original Harry, all the times he was kind)

Overall, well worth the time to read (as are the authors two stories in their "November Tales" series)

    Summary

Sarah McBride Anderson is best known for her work as a suffragette and later as the Representative of Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District, where she served from 1925-1937 (the first woman to represent Massachusetts, and the seventh woman in the US House of Representatives). Less well known is her lifelong friendship with J.A. Pendleton, the celebrated novelist and Pulitzer Prize winner. The two women met at college, where they roomed together. Although the correspondence between the two women after their college years has been published, these letters (excerpted from Anderson's letters home to her family during their college years) have not, and provide a fascinating glimpse into their friendship.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A really wonderful addition to the book that enhances all the original themes while giving a different perspective. Sally and Judy are just as likeable through this retelling and Sally's voice is captivating. And even though I personally have a soft spot for thr Jervis/Judy romance, I can also appreciate this alternate perspective and thr valid concerns.
