“He's got my mouth guard,” Matthew says, trying to wiggle free and get it back. Kreider gives him one last acidic look and throws the mouth guard into the stands. Matthew's mouth hangs open as some flicker of recognition passes between them. Something hot and twisted and shameful and alive that Matthew is oh so familiar with.

“You're still upset,” said Nate finally.
“I’m fine,” Cale argued, voice a bit too harsh.
He aggressively untied his skates, and Nate laid a hand on top of his to get him to stop. Cale pulled back, relenting. One skate was half-untied and the other's laces were splayed out on the ground. Cale sighed frustratedly as he sat back in his stall. He adjusted his neck guard and scratched just below his jaw, entire body feeling foreign.
“You're not,” Nate objected easily. “That’s fine, you know? You can be upset.”
Cale shrugged. “Fine. I'm pissed.”
“I know.”Nate gets hit, the Avs lose, and Cale is none too happy about it. (set in January of the season)

"Okay," scoffs Matthew, "You talk a big game now but you're just gonna look like an embarrassment when you waste your record-breaking season losing to a Wildcard team in the playoffs."
"Yeah," Charlie laughs, "As if you're gonna win two more before we get one."
"Keep doubting us all you want," Matthew says, and takes a drink.
