It’s not helping, and he’s usually here. John B is always by his side when he gets like this, always there to talk softly and shove JJ’s head between his knees. He told JJ once that it’s supposed to calm his heart rate, and magically it does. Anything John B says is automatically truth to JJ. John B could tell him the sky is green and the ocean is yellow, and somehow JJ would find a way to make it true. But he can’t think about it right now, because all he can do is think left behind when John B’s name crosses his mind.

"Steve?" Nancy grabs him by the shoulders, the same way he did not too long ago. Not now. Not here. Please, it's too soon. We just got out of the last one. "Steve!"
His eyes find her, glassy but present.
Silence has fallen across the bedroom all of the sudden. She can feel everyone's eyes burning into her and Steve, who is gapping like he can't find the air to speak.
The next one strikes close, light and sound mixed almost as one, making her window tremble. He shakes too, inside her grasp, and suddenly Steve —who barely breaks a sweat while running across forests and dark deserted lands— is hyperventilating.
"I-" he tries. "I don't- I can't-"
Breathe. He can't breathe.

Summary
He thinks about the relief in Eddie’s voice when he said he had a hunch about Steve’s whereabouts, like Dustin is the chosen one for understanding what makes Steve tick. Eddie’s joked about it before; he’d called it “sibling telepathy” when Dustin had silently communicated his popcorn order at the movies, and he’d nudged Steve in the ribs when Steve’s nose wrinkled meaning Gross, dude. Then Steve had huffed a laugh, nudging Dustin back. Okay, okay. I’ll pay for it, you little shit.
But Eddie gets Steve, too, Dustin thinks; that’s why he called him. And yeah, it’s different than the way Dustin understands Steve, but it’s significant enough for Eddie to make the cut of Steve Harrington Interpreters in Dustin’s mind.

Summary
Robin turns on the radio to keep Steve awake and mutters a complaint about the song playing before focusing her full attention on the road. Steve watches the world pass by, the streetlights blurring together to create patterns that make him wonder if the drugs are still in his system.
Hunched over in his seat, the lights start to make his head hurt. He closes his eyes, brows furrowed, and turns his head to the other side, where Robin is sitting. He’s pretty sure she’s still looking at the road, but she somehow knows his eyes are shut and taps his thigh. “Stay awake, Steve,” She says softly, and her voice sounds so warm it tugs at something in his chest.

Summary
Starcourt Mall was on fire, and Steve was learning all sorts of new things. Like, Robin was the spitting image of her mom, and defeating Russians often came with a concussion. Like, concussions felt a lot like your brain trying to escape from your skull, and Robin was hard to keep secrets from. Like, his parents traveling for the Fourth of July hadn't bothered him before today, and the idea of Robin coming home with him brought... relief? Yeah. Relief.
