Summary
Over the years, as more and more things piled up, George created a false narrative.
His soulmate was a gamer. One who was kind but forgetful. They had a love for everything that was apparent in the way every object George possessed had a faint look of wear.
And as new things piled on—bags of American crisps, a toothpaste cap, a wrinkled sock—George’s soulmate started to look more and more like Dream.
A soulmate au where lost objects appear in your soulmate’s space.

Because there was a hand with his string attached to it, and they both knew how it was destined to end.
“Can I test you on that?” George asked. “You not kicking me out?”
With that one question, Dream knew he could never escape fate for all he’d ever tried. Because this, right here, right now, was fate, and he had beautiful brown eyes and a smile like the sun.
“Always,” Dream said, the word catching in his throat.
Born with a gray string promising a doomed love, Dream visits George in London pre-visa, a little too angry at fate and infatuated with his best friend.

“I’m the only one who cares about the viewers, so I’m giving them content: Dream recreates his childhood photos.”
Dream’s eyes narrowed, and George forced himself to not look away. “So this is solely for the viewers? Not anyone else?”
“Who else would it be for?” George scoffed. “Why would I care about you recreating your own stupid pictures with dumb props and a cheesy smile?”
Dream pulled him closer. “You think my smile’s cheesy?”
Or, 3 times Dream recreated old photos + 1 time George recreated his.

“I really missed this town.”
Dream snorts. “It hasn’t changed.”
George considers his words—considers him. There’s that ease to his posture that George noticed for the first time on the street. Now, it’s even more apparent. It’s practically screaming: I’ve grown older, and I’ve grown older without you.
George swallows unevenly. “Yeah,” he says. “I saw the old movie posters are still up.”
In the spring of 2021, George confesses his unrequited feelings for his best friend. And in the autumn of 2024, George returns to ghosts and second chances.

And George knew what would come next. He’d heard it thousands of times and would likely hear it a thousand times more.
So, instead, he stopped it before it began. “Sapnap, don’t.”
“He’s not—“
Like that, the anger came back. It felt like pain, like knuckles splitting against skin. “What, Sap? He’s not coming back? He’s not returning? He doesn’t care about us? I know. I know.”
A year after Dream leaves, George begins to simultaneously heal and unravel. (Or, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the prince’s perspective.)
