Summary
There’s probably a version of reality where that happens. Where Aaron has a string of boyfriends he likes — maybe even loves — and a succession of flats. Where he’s the world’s best honorary uncle, and takes over the Dingle clan, and is happy in a simple, nice way.
Probably.
In this reality there’s Robert.

Summary
When Robert’s twenty he spends Christmas with a girl called Erica and her family. They’ve been seeing each other for a couple months at this point, which mostly means shagging at house parties and falling asleep on the sofa watching old episodes of M*A*S*H, but he likes her well enough. She wears cheap vanilla body spray and tastes like fake strawberry lip balm and spearmint gum, and when she finds out he isn’t going back to Yorkshire she invites him over, says it isn’t anything fancy but her cousins bring their boyfriends so no one will mind.
(It’s the first time she’s called him her boyfriend.
Robert spent the Christmas before curled up on his shitty kitchen floor, drinking the bottle of wine he’d won in a pub raffle and staring at the landline on the wall, wishing and hoping and dreading for it to ring. It hadn’t, and he’d fallen asleep with the taste of salt and Burgundy on his tongue.
He says yes immediately.)

Summary
“Dare,” Kent had joked — mostly, sorta, not really at all — and Jack had blinked in confusion and then stared at him with wide eyes and a slack mouth for long enough to make Kent nervous before wrapping his fingers carefully around Kent’s wrist and tugging him inside.
[Or: Kent and Jack get hitched. Which would be fine if Jack wasn't already engaged to somebody else. Kent's life is a running joke.]

Summary
It’d been touch and go, Andy told him when Robert finally picked up the phone, but he’d made it. There hadn't been much else to say given the resentment still clinging to them at the time, but Robert had taken annual leave and headed back to Emmerdale, sat around the kitchen table as Vic cried on his shoulder and Diane fussed and Annie called from a bad connection in Spain, and braved himself to see his dad for the first time in three years.
In typical Jack Sugden fashion, he’d barely reacted to Robert’s presence, taking it as a given, and Robert had bitten his tongue and tried not to scream.
[Or: Robert's home for the weekend, which would be fine if they were a normal, healthy family.]

Summary
It’s only when Aaron twists a little to answer a question that Mack’s dragged forward an inch or two and realises very quickly the grave mistake he’s made.
God, he’s an idiot.
He should move. He should stay. He should lean forward so he’s pressing down at the right angle. He should dig a hole and bury himself, Jesus fucking Christ.
