Things aren't the same after Lex returns from Isla Nublar. Mom and Dad are divorced now, and Lex, Tim, and their mom are living in a new house that doesn't seem like home. Tyrannosauruses and velociraptors haunt her dreams. People got hurt - and killed - because of her. There's nothing she can do to make up for that. But she can apologize to the people who got hurt and thank the people who saved her. She already apologized to Tim and thanked Alan and Dr. Malcolm. She thanked Dr. Malcolm, too, but he was kind of out of it. She didn't know if he understood. Lex decides to write to him.
Meanwhile, Ian Malcolm is lying in a hospital bed, waiting for the next dose of morphine, for his leg to heal, for something besides nightmares to distract him from the pain and the discomfort of lying still for so long. Yet he knows that’s not likely to happen. He’s in a hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica. Alan, Ellie, and John visited him a few times at first, but they’ve long since returned home. His kids are at home in Texas. They can’t visit him here. But some day he’ll get released, and he can see them again. For now, he waits.
And then he receives a letter – from one of the kids on the island. Lex Murphy.
