“Ev.”
Buck felt his heart sink further when Maddie finally spoke—he was only Evan when he was in trouble, and he was only Ev when something terrible had happened.

Derek Hale was smart, he was sarcastic, and he could go toe-to-toe with Stiles over completely obscure things for literal hours. He was a first-year professor at NYU, who had the tiny office right next to the broom closet Stiles had managed to shove his PHD desk into, and he was probably the only other person in the program that took mythology seriously (meaning he was the only person who didn’t make Stiles want to put his head through the wall).
He was also hot as fuck, but that was beside the point. Stiles had a little bit of a massive crush, but that was also beside the point.

Summary
Evan Buckley had a problem.
A very, very, big problem.
It was something that he had been dealing with for the better part of two years, something that he had tried to ignore, something that had tried his absolute best to come to terms with.
The problem was that Buck was in love with Eddie.
Well, okay, no—him being in love wasn’t the problem. The problem was that Buck was not a subtle person.
He had heart eyes for Eddie, and literally everyone knew about it… everyone except the man in question.
The problem was that everytime Buck tried to open his mouth to confess his feelings, he absolutely, completely, 200% choked. -

you can all thank Eli for this, who inspired everything when she asked what my favorite Hallmark trope was.
(the answer? all of them.)
--
The roar of the ancient diesel drowned out any hope for conversation as the truck easily cut through the snow, and Buck felt his stomach start to sink every minute that they drove without seeing any sign of life.
Fuck. He might have actually frozen out here.
“Eddie?”
Buck looked over as Eddie turned, the lights of a tiny town starting to show further down the road.
“I’m B-Buck.”
The way that Eddie beamed at him was second only to the hot air when it came to warming him up, leaning into the touch as Eddie reached over to squeeze Buck’s shoulder, the crinkling of the foil blanket helping distract him.
“Well, Buck. Welcome to Mount Pocono.” -

Last Christmas, Eddie had—as Hen would put it—his ‘oh’ moment.
No, it wasn’t when Buck had thrown himself into action to help some random dad see his daughter sing for Christmas.
No, it wasn’t when Eddie caught Buck trying to sneak extra presents (for he and Christopher both) under the Diaz tree.
No, it wasn’t even when some random elf had complimented Buck on his “beautiful family”.
Eddie’s ‘oh’ moment came when Athena announced that she was saving them all from themselves, when he walked into the firehouse loft and saw his kid standing there, beaming like a megawatt spotlight, smiling not only up at his dad but at Buck; and suddenly things clicked into place. -

“You really love that kid, huh?” Buck murmured against his chest, and Eddie smiled, a soft chuckle making his chest (and Buck’s head) shake. “I do. He deserves everything I can give him and so much more. I’d do anything, give up anything, to make sure Chris is happy and safe.”
“You’d... sell your car for him?” He asked, looking up as Eddie scoffed.
“Please. In a heartbeat.”
Buck rose a brow, fingers circling Eddie’s palm. “You’d sell your house?”
“Without a doubt.” Eddie locked Buck’s fingers in his own, bringing their hands to his lips, kissing each of Buck’s knuckles.
“Would you sell your soul?”

“It’s an omen.”
“It’s not an omen, Chim. Jesus.”
“Look, Eddie, all I’m saying is that it could be an omen.”
“Wait,” Buck interjected, flopping down on the couch beside Eddie, easily tossing his legs up onto Eddie’s lap. “What’s an omen? Did Eddie get an omen? Wait, did you get cursed? Because you all know, I’m very—“
“We know,” Chim started, his eyes rolling back to a degree that would have hurt an average man. “We know, you’re in tune to the ethereal.”
Buck shrugged, chewing on a thumbnail, getting more comfortable on the couch. “I’m just saying. I’d know if Eddie were cursed. What’s up with your omen?”
Eddie winced as he felt Buck’s legs press down a bit on his lap, the stupidity of everything he had experienced weighing down on him. It sounded so stupid to say out loud, but there was no denying what he had seen—especially since Hen had seen the same on their last call. “I mean, I don’t think it’s a curse. I think I’m being… followed. Stalked, maybe?” he started, Buck’s expression quickly going to one of concern. “But, no, nothing bad. It’s honestly helpful. There’s just… a dog. I’ve seen this dog, the same dog, on the past few calls we’ve been on.” -

for the absolutely infallible @eddiesdiaz who asked me on Tumblr:
High school au where Buck’s the sad lonely kid with the shit family and Eddie’s the popular captain of the wrestling team who makes it his personal mission to make Buck an honorary Diaz and convince him that he deserves nice things I am just saying
———Buck was good at going unseen.
It was a defense mechanism—his parent’s couldn’t get upset with what they didn’t realize was there—and it had only amped up once Maddie graduated. Once she went off to college, Buck had no reason to be a distraction anymore, to try and pull attention off of anyone; so he just got better at it. He could pick things up and set them down without a sound. He constantly walked on the balls of his feet. He even kept his breathing even, slow and low, whenever he wasn’t alone.
Buck was invisible to absolutely everyone.
Well… everyone except Eddie Diaz.

Let it be known that Edmundo Diaz was not a subtle man.
Patient, sure. Kind, absolutely. But subtle? Definitely not.
“Eddie, are you paying attention?”
“To you? Always, Buckaroo.”

Asked by the absolutely wonderful @maysgrant on Tumblr:
since im in astronaut au mode, what about a soft fic about eddie going stargazing ?———
As great as LA was, it was shitty for stargazing—the city never slept, literally, and when Eddie looked up at the sky he could hardly see more than the Hollywood sign when he wanted to forget everything manmade.
It mocked him.

for the splendid @casscent on Tumblr, who asked;
heyyyy hope you’re doing great! Ok how about Eddie meeting Buck in south america, bartending, instead of LAFD? I’ve been having that idea but too lazy to write. Thanks, xoxo.———
“Welcome to Padrino, how can I satisfy you tonight?”
“Oh God, is that seriously how you greet your customers?”
It probably said a lot about Buck that a sarcastic response through him that much, but hey, being one of the few English speakers in one of the best bars in Equador had its perks. It was huge, it was clean, it was easy to find, and the immediate distance to the U.S. Army base in Manta meant that there was never a short supply of American citizens, going to or from deployment, who only spoke (you guessed it) English.
Even now, he had to admit, it was surprising getting a response that wasn’t a clear dismissal (or a drink order, acting like Buck hadn’t said anything at all), but Buck had always been good at rolling with the punches.
“Trust me, looking at you? I could have said a lot worse.”

for my ride or die @buckleydiazs who asked me on Tumblr;
talk to me about eddie and chris asking buck to move in, pls and thank u 🥰———
“It’s Maddie. She says Taylor Kelly is at my apartment complex. Apparently there was a pretty big drug bust in the building across the way, she has her van camped out in our lot.”
And, well, Eddie wasn’t about to tolerate that, wasn’t about to tolerate anything that made Buck unhappy, anything that could suck the joy out of him in an instant, for reasons that he chose not to dive too deep into. He focused instead on the problem (and yeah, Taylor Kelly was a problem with a capital B), and what he figured was the easiest solution.
“Oh. Well, then you’re staying at our place tonight.”

For the wonderful @boys-love-or-bust-19507, who asked me on Tumblr:
Can you write a fic where Buck has a really tough day and Eddie and Chris take care of him?———
“Alright, Special Agent Christopher, target is almost in sight. Are you ready for action?”
“Yeah!”
Eddie grinned down to his son, basking in the childlike excitement mirrored back at him for a hot second, knowing that very few things would ever compare to these moments again. He had never seen Chris click as well with anyone as he had Buck—even Carla was a close second to that, not that Eddie was about to tell her that—and honestly, there should have never been any question in his mind as to what Chris would say when Eddie told him Buck needed some help.

“Eddie?”
“Hang on, Buck.”
Buck felt good. Damn, he hadn’t felt this good in ages. When was the last time that he woke up without an ache in his leg, or the burn of water going down his throat? He honestly couldn’t remember.
Best of all, when he looked up… there was Eddie, arms around him, and Buck was so happy he could burst. Eddie always made him so happy. Eddie was, like, the best person in the entire world… even when he looked sad.
“S’wrong, Eddie?”
“Just hang on, okay? Just stay awake.”

A prompt for the illustrious @buckleyevan on Tumblr;
Hi ❤️ if you’re still talking prompts could you write Buck temporarily going blind and Eddie helping him cope till he gets better? Only if you want, no pressure and thx 😘
———Every time Eddie closes his eyes, he relives his mistake.
He can see Buck taking the stairs two at a time, clearing the last floor of the burning apartment building. He can see the ladder at the end of the hallway, the light at the end of a burning tunnel. He can see part of the ceiling give way as he turns, reaching for Buck, too slow, too fucking slow, and Buck—
—is gone, pushed through the floor by the caving-in ceiling, what Eddie was sure was a scream drowned out by the roar of the flames.

Summary
If there was one thing that Eddie Diaz knew, it was that life was not fair.
His two tours weren’t fair. His son’s CP wasn’t fair. His marriage with Sharon hadn’t been fair.
But pulling up to the 118, stepping out of his truck, and coming face to face with Buck? Buck, who was clad only in his turnout pants and suspenders, who was dripping wet?
Well, that wasn’t just unfair, that was mean.
