They only have one last summer before they go off to college, and Will is sick of keeping his cards so close to his chest. So, in a fit of alcohol-induced bravery, he tells Mike everything.
Instead of breaking his heart, Mike proposes a deal: they’ll date for the summer. Get Mike out of Will’s system, show him he makes for a lousy boyfriend anyway, and make sure there aren’t any what-ifs waiting for him in New York.
No stone left unturned, after all.
Or: Summer brings clouds, nostalgia, and the all-consuming fear of change. They deal with it.

Will splutters. “Say what?”
“Like we’re what, Will? Say it. Why do I make your boyfriend so nervous?”
“You’re being a jerk.” He looks down and picks at a loose thread on his sweater.
Mike is being a jerk, but he’s just tired. And Will is here in Mike’s car in the middle of nowhere, protected by the growing darkness of the evening, and goddamnit, Mike wants to hear him say it. He wants to hear Will say Mike isn’t better.
Or: Mike and Will have been Mike and Will for sixteen years. Mike is not going to Will let someone else ruin that.

I’m not letting you out of my sight, actually. You have to be attached to my hip like Max and that goddamn Walkman.”

After Vecna split the earth beneath Hawkins, nothing has been the same. Will's sensitivity to the Upside Down is stronger than ever, Dustin and Lucas are consumed with grief, and Mike and El are not speaking.
Then, Mike falls under Vecna's curse, and the party discovers that his way out of the trance is not through song but through his oldest friend, who is hopelessly in love with him. To be safe, everyone decides it's best if Will does not let Mike out of his sight for the foreseeable future.

Will winces. “Between Vecna, everything that happened to me in Upside Down... I suppose things like this affect every aspect of your life. So I've never found it particularly… er, appealing.”
Mike finds it almost natural to smile at that choice of words. To make Will feel less out of place, he shifts even closer. His knee grazes Will's chair. Will flinches.
“But you tried,” Mike deduces, slowly.
Will insists on keeping his gaze down. “Yeah.”
“‘Cause you…” Mike follows the contours of Will's jaw with his eyes; if he can’t see it on his face, he hopes to catch a reaction from the rest of his body. “Because you want to.”Or: Will is having a tough time coping with college anxiety which results in constantly snapping at Mike. Mike offers a best-friendly helping hand.
