“I just want to take care of you, Sydney,” Carm said, bringing a hand over Sydney’s knuckles. Her hand was unreasonably warm and callused. Sydney looked at Carmy’s tattooed knuckles over Sydney’s own. How casually Carmy did things like this, these acts of comfort, when everything else was such a painful labour.
“I don’t need taking care of,” Sydney said. “I just want you to…”
“To what?” Carmy said. “I’ll do it.”
“Just be here,” Sydney said, frustrated. “Just be my partner. Don’t do dumb shit without telling me.”

Sydney has a lot of problems. Carmy poses many of them, despite all of her efforts. Somehow, the two women become closer over the course of events.

So yeah, maybe Santos had Garcia’s driver card stuck to her bedroom mirror during her formative teenage years, and maybe that headshot of Garcia with the trademark no-nonsense look on her face played some small part in her discovering her sexuality. And maybe in the back of her mind, she was thinking of Garcia when she declared her major in mechanical engineering, when she was pulling all-nighters with the FSAE team, when she was doing her PhD at the University of Pittsburgh before everything fell apart, again. Tashi’s still talking—he can see her lips moving, but he’s not paying any attention to what’s coming out, because his train of thought has skidded to a halt before careening into a ravine and exploding on impact.
