"Thanatos hears a lot of last words. It’s a side effect of his occupation—his domain, his obligation. Unfinished sentences, partial phrases, and cut-off words echo in the back of his mind constantly. They usually come right before he has to make his appearance on the mortal surface, serving as a useful reminder of his appointments. But really, he always knows where he needs to be, so the stream of doomed consciousness usually falls to a background drone.
Which is why an all-too-familiar voice stands out from the rest of the chorus and strikes through Thanatos like a spear."
