Summary
There’s many things Naim pictures when thinking of Ryan Whelan. Like a scrapbook, pages flipping through his mind, polaroids of blonde curls and mischievous eyes.
So many things. Blood so bright and red Naim can almost feel it against his skin, ripped skin over pale knuckles, tears that taste of salt and hurt. He sees Ryan’s sunburnt shoulders and soft eyelashes. He sees his smile — so bright it rivals the sun.
He sees dark circles beneath bright blue eyes. Arms filled with bruises. Black eyes. Cut lips.
Kisses. So many kisses. The sweet kind. The angry kind. The sad kind. The beautiful kind.

The first time Naim Reid ever saw Ryan Whelan was on a missing poster.
The second was six months later.
Under the threat of conversion therapy, seventeen-year-old Naim runs away from his new town of Bandee to the streets of Melbourne. There he meets Ryan, a kid his age hustling on the streets and sleeping on a friend's floor to survive. At first, the two seem connected by a bond neither can explain, and Naim quickly feels like he's found a home.

Naim Reid has spent years perfecting the art of being invisible.
Growing up in Bandee, a small and deeply religious town where everyone knows everyone, Naim learned quickly that hiding parts of himself was easier than risking being judged. Especially when the person he secretly liked was Ryan Whelan-- the boy who seemed completely out of reach and always stood on the other side of Hunter’s cruel jokes. So when Naim arrives at Bible camp for the summer and discovers he has been assigned to share a cabin with Ryan, he expects the worst. Except Ryan remembers him. Over the course of one summer, ten campers, one shared cabin, and countless late-night conversations force two boys who spent years missing each other to finally see what was right in front of them. A silhouette breaks the surface, ripples fanning out in dark shadows around the figure. Naim blinks darkness from the fringes of his failing vision. It’s Ryan. He’s trying to say something, but Naim can’t decipher anything through the thick water. His hand reaches upwards, trying to meet Ryan’s outstretched fingers, but he never does.
“You shouldn’t be here, Naim,” Ryan’s voice is nothing like it had been in the waking world. Here, it’s venomous and wrong. It’s full of a hatred that breaks Naim’s heart. “You deserve this. I should’ve let you drown.”

Naim takes a summer trip down to Torquay with his best friend, Jess, and manages to drown himself on day one. Stunning. Lifesaver Ryan Whelan becomes his number one hero… and hopefully a little more.

Naim lay completely paralyzed. His lethargic, unfocused gaze remained fixed on the dusty floorboards. He was floating outside his own body now, watching almost detachedly through a darkening blur as his violent attackers were suddenly ripped away—dragged one by one into the swallowing shadows, their horrified screams silenced in the dark.
