I'm told this needs a horror tag and the previous blurb was a spoiler, so here is a new non-spoiler summary. Protect your mental health, this story is about someone very mentally ill.
Katya Petrovna takes over the care of her mama and little brother when their father passes, and has to navigate a gritty, cold, and economically depressed post-Soviet Russia ruled by political corruption and organised crime. She meets Vitali Konstantinov, a seemingly nice man who woos her with flowers, gifts, and the temptation of a better life.
But Vitali isn't as he appears.
Kotik is the story of how nice girls get caught up in an ugly, complicated world, which makes them question their own morality and the extent to which they are willing to risk everything for a better life, a better future, and true love.WOW, okay, this sounds really wholesome. It’s not, but it does burn slowly. You just have to watch for the signs early on ;)
About the cultural and historical accuracy of this fiction:
This story takes place after the fall of Communism, spanning 1991-1999. Although the time frame is about 8 months, I have incorporated elements from that decade to illustrate what life was like during those years.
