Peter stared at him for a bunch of seconds, unsure of what to say. He couldn’t believe Wade’s words, no matter how loudly they were echoing in his head. For some reason, he couldn’t really wrap his head around the fact that the one person he loved could love him the same way, even after Peter told him he may never be able to touch him.
But, apparently, he did. He told him he did and Peter felt his chest light up with warmth and his eyes fill with tears.

It’s pouring rain and they have to bike home from school, both of them huffing and puffing and rapidly wiping their eyes to make sure they don’t crash into each other. It’s been about a month of careful avoidance and overly practiced politeness on both of their ends, dreading the inevitable conversation that’s to come about what happened in Mike’s bedroom.
Hey remember when we made out even though we’re both boys and we’ve been best friends since we were five and also you are dating my sister?
There’s just no way to bring that up casually in conversation.

“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

“So– okay, fine, whatever. Should we, like, tell them to get their heads out of their asses and that we’re not– um– dating, or–”
“I think,” Will cuts in, “well. You know what would be funny?”
Honestly, Mike doesn't know what he thought being Will Byers' fake-boyfriend would entail, but he definitely didn't think it would involve this many ugly Christmas sweaters.
