    As with anything, Nicky's first thought upon the flash-bang-hiss of the grenade is of Joe.

    Joe, who's been watching football for the last hour on the staticky TV next to Booker without his noise-reducing earplugs in. Joe, who's been doing so well even in the uprooting aftermath of Sudan and a new family member, grounded and calm at his center from a year of Nicky's careful guidance, his senses free and joyful, his focus steady.

    Joe, who Nicky loves.

    Joe, who is currently pushed face down on the stone floor, eyes wide and frightened, an armoured knee on the back of his neck as he gasps and his mouth moves silently and he loses consciousness to the throat-stinging gas swirling around them.

    Atef bandages the scrape along Yusuf’s knee, patting it gently with his hand when he’s done before scooching back to place everything carefully back into the little box.

    When he’s done, his eyes flick to the fig seeds drying on Yusuf’s sleeve.

    “I’m going to make you a deal,” he says then. “You can pick as many figs as you want, as long as you pick an equal amount for me. I cannot climb as high to reach the figs at the top anymore, so in this you’ll be doing me a favour at least.”

    Yusuf goes to shake his head, fear striking his heart.

    “I will never climb again,” he swears, with all the finality and graveness of a young boy who will certainly climb again.

    A look into some of the ways Yusuf has dodged, (narrowly) avoided, or out-smarted death in his long life – or, a slightly exaggerated but mostly true account of the times Yusuf thought he would die, but didn’t.

    When he said the same at home, it earned him a huff of worn good humor from his elders and a Happens to the best of us, al-Tayyib. We’re going to miss you. But Nicolò eyed him over his shoulder and mildly said, “I see.”
