“You are sure?” Pierre asks, voice barely above a whisper. He knows it’s always been Daniil. There has never been anyone else. Except for some reason, his mind won't shut up, the elation twisting into something that feels more sour.
Daniil’s gaze is haunted, and Pierre feels ice settle in his chest.
“I hate this,” he mutters, frustration spilling out in three short words.
“I know,” Daniil says knowingly, voice steady. His hands smooth up Pierre's face, hunting down a couple of his tears.
“I—I don’t know if I can put it more into words.”
Daniil exhales, “Can I show you instead?”

The way Daniil's gaze goes dark tells Pierre he’s had the same thought too.

Racing in Monaco is always special to Charles. Racing at home, a place of time-honored traditions, and those he holds close. The team wants to make the race weekend full of nothing but the same cherished and fond memories he’ll hold close, by honoring him with a firesuit in the colors of home. Red and White. The colors of victory. Triumph.
Except when Charles steps to the mirror to study his reflection, it is not himself he sees in the mirror. It is a fond smile and brown eyes he hasn’t seen in a while -

“Hey, Gas?” Ben’s soothing British accent pulls Pierre from his thoughts
“When you’re done, or if you are done, why don't you go upstairs, maybe run a bath? You can pop on that movie you wanted to watch.”
He knows Ben is right. Pierre needs a bath and the movie he's been dying to watch on his iPad that has been queued up for days. It would settle his mind, ease his sore muscles, and aid him in a good night’s sleep. He’s already prepared himself mentally for the sleepless night looming before him, but Ben is right. It will do him good.

He’s perfection embodied, and Charles wants to kiss the one freckle he can see between his cross and right nipple. He wants to trace along the contour of his nose and place a kiss at its tip. He imagines Pierre scrunching up his face as Charles does, knowing Pierre would rather have a kiss on the lips. But he can’t. These are all things he could do if they lie facing each other.
He tries not to be resentful. He can't be. He won't let himself be.

Turns out they led Pierre on that he was in consideration for the seat, staking their claim and making sure Pierre stayed theirs in the meantime. Pierre's navigating the aftermath of the shock announcement struggling to process it all, and Charles is there, like always.
