Summary
This series focuses on Friedrich Arnheiter during and after his service in the Afrika Korps in Hauptmann Hans Dietrich’s company in 3rd Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion.
Many years ago, when I began writing Rat Patrol fiction, I created an original character, Friedrich Arnheiter, to be the new guy in Dietrich's company. He was originally intended only to be a walk-on part in that first story ("The Pass of Thermopylae Raid"), never to be seen again. However, he became a recurring character in my RP fiction as an Everyman and the Afrika Korps' answer to Radar O'Reilly.
Some readers have been interested in reading more about ‘Fritz’. In the days of print fanzines there was no way that I could explore him in any depth. But with the rise of fan fiction online, I am finally able to tell his story from his point of view in a way that was never possible before.
The series title "Into the Wide World" comes from an old German folk song, which begins "Wem Gott will rechte Gunst erweisen, den schickt er in die weite Welt...". This translates as "Whom God truly wishes to do good, He sends him into the wide world." From North Africa to Scotland to London, Arnheiter's world became much wider than he ever expected.

Summary
This is how it is: Hogan and his men are the devious operatives, working underneath Klink's nose. Sabotage, thefts and whatever else London orders. Klink is the inept POW camp commander with a perfect non-escape record they can manipulate to work in their favor.
Perfect cover.
No one ever expected anything to change.
Especially not in the way it did. With a bang, not a whimper. With a revelation that changes everything. Especially for a special operations military Sentinel trained to work alone. Someone who thought he had everything under control, who knew the players in this game they were playing.
Fact is: he didn't.
When things go extremely sideways for Hogan because he makes a big mistake in front of a Gestapo Sentinel, the help he receives comes from the last place he expected. It turns his world upside down and inside out.
They just might not survive it.

Summary
Hauptmann Hans Dietrich isn't a cruel man, nor is he a fool.
The Rat Patrol has been a thorn in his side for years. When their leader was captured and dragged off to God knows where, Dietrich poured himself a glass of wine and bought a local pastry to celebrate. He didn't want to think about the stories that he's heard coming out of the Channel Isles or some of the whispers he's heard in the bars. Dietrich is a soldier first, a civilian never, and he's good at turning parts of himself off.
Until part of a work detail collapses at his feet and Dietrich gets a blast from the past.
He can't ignore what's happening now. Nor can a single man hope to change the system. What he can do, though, is try to make the best of a bad situation. If the other ranking officers can keep pets, so will he. The only difference is Dietrich's is American instead of Russian.
