Summary
After the chaos of the tourney, Prince Daeron Targaryen faces the aftermath of bloodshed and injury. Searching for Egg, he finds Ser Duncan gravely wounded by the elm tree — and is forced to confront his own guilt.
"His heart ached seeing the knight like this. Daeron did not know much of honour, didn't possess much of it himself, but he recognised it when he saw it. Ser Duncan had done what all knights should, he had defended the innocent. He had started an avalanche of blood with it, but he had stayed true to his oath."

“So you thought something out of my control had happened to me?”
“Well, it could have been in your control.”
Kaveh’s cheeks redden impossibly further. “Right, so the sleeping for two days straight was the byproduct of my own poor decisions. You’ve always been such a true believer in me, Alhaitham.”
“How long you slept is at best a red herring.”
Or,
“You’re alive.” There’s something hard to discern in Alhaitham’s eyes when he says it, like he’s trying to convince himself more than Kaveh. “You won’t die here, not like this, and not with me.”
Kaveh finds himself cursed by the withering in a way that only Alhaitham can resolve, Alhaitham finds himself still in love as he desperately tries not to lose best friend again.

Summary
When his dark circles turned a gruesome, necrotic violet, and the whites of his eyes were split open by yawning vermilion cracks, Kaveh decided that it could not be exhaustion because Kaveh knew exhaustion and it could not be an infection because Kaveh did not have time for an infection. Somehow, without noticing, he had died.
Kaveh dies and wanders into paradise.
