Summary
Ilya opened one of his messages.
Have you seen the news?
Ilya, call me. Now.
Please tell me you already fucking know.
Jesus Christ, man. That was it. No context. No explanation. Just panic wrapped in vague bullshit.
His jaw locked. “Are you fucking serious right now,” he muttered, thumb scrolling harder than necessary. Say it or don’t, you assholes. The half-answers made his skin crawl. It felt like they were all circling something awful, whispering around it, waiting for him to step close enough to get hit.
His chest felt tight now, pressure building, so he did the one thing that made sense. He opened social media.
Shane Hollander’s name was everywhere.
Or
Shane was hurt in ways everyone could see, and in ways only Ilya would carry.

Summary
“I may have made a… mistake.”
“A mistake,” Shane repeats.
“Little mistake.”
Shane scoffs. “What was the mistake?”
“I did not mean to be an asshole,” Ilya says slowly, picking his words carefully. “And… I would rather be at your home than at hotel. If we are going to be stuck, anyway.”
________After Ilya leaves Shane’s apartment for the first time, he knows he’s on thin ice and at risk of falling into more serious feelings. He’s ready to put distance back between them.
A Montreal blizzard has other ideas.

Summary
Devour was a good word for what Ilya wanted to do to Shane. Eat. Devour. Rolled off the tongue. But he hated that he could not think of an English word to convey the resonant, drilling consonants ringing in his brain when he kissed Shane with depth and hunger bordering on cannibalistic. The consonants in the Russian word that meant an act between consume and gobble up, with hard zh and rolling r sounds, were a crunch so delicious he could chew on it forever. Sometimes Shane felt like that. Like the crunchiest, most delicious hard candy in the mouth.
God, the stupid fucking English.

Ilya thinks in English. With Russian subtitles.
