“John…” he muttered, followed by a close-mouthed whine.
John froze, as much as a non-physical presence in Arthur’s mind could freeze.
Arthur… he let out a purring whisper. Is it… A nice dream again?
Arthur sighed again, shifting slightly. With every other breath, quiet whines made it out of his throat. John slowly raised his hand to his face, passing his fingers along the textured skin. His features seemed smooth, relaxed – it really didn’t seem like Arthur was having a nightmare.
“John…” Arthur mouthed against his hand, turning his face towards the touch, and something in John seized with a possessive heat he couldn’t quite conceptualize at that point. He dug his fingers into Arthur’s cheek, just enough to exert pressure but not enough to hurt, careful of the wooden pinky.---
Arthur keeps whispering John's name in his sleep and being cagey about it when he wakes. John finally confronts him about it.

“And as much as I believe that,” John begins and Arthur waits until he continues for the next pull at the cigarette, “you’re sure there’s nothing else that’s sending you out here like a brooding teenager?”
Arthur nearly splutters, turning his head toward John for the full wide-eyed effect, “Brooding? Am I brooding?”
John makes a noncommittal noise, makes sure to ruffle the sleeve of his coat as he motions, “It was the closest word I could come to, so yes. I think you are. For the entire day you have been, in fact.”
