Sherman is called into camp to assess Hawkeye Pierce's sanity, he unfortunately suffers from some "gyroscope trouble" (i.e., an overly-friendly advance towards one Major Margaret Houlihan) and is unceremoniously given the boot. Frank stays back to give Margaret some comfort, but discovers far more than he is comfortable with learning.

“Perfect.” Frank blinked when Palin stopped writing and looked at him directly for only the second time since the exercise had started. The word caught up to Frank then and he froze; feeling his chest seize.

Summary
San Francisco is smoggy, overcrowded, and full of some of the wildest people Hawkeye has ever met. The fact that BJ Hunnicutt lives there is nothing but a coincidence spun into a blessing in disguise.
Or,
Draft cards are being sent out like candy to young men, the Detroit Riot is being printed in every newspaper coastline to coastline, unrest between the US and Soviet Union is growing by the minute, and there's absolutely nothing that can be done about any of it. Regardless, Hawkeye finds himself in one of the many large demonstrations in San Francisco when police storm in to break it up. He never meant it to be a tipping point in his life.
