What Aventurine needs to do is add a personal stake. He has to become a part of the equation that the doctor can’t simply cancel away, someone who will inevitably suffer should he try. And what better way to do so than making himself the gift?
Ratio could refuse the silk jackets and bejewelled paperweights that Aventurine had so generously delivered to his office by post, but not Aventurine himself. To do so would be a rejection of their relationship, and Ratio is not cruel enough to do that. At one point in time, Aventurine would have thought so. But things are different now.
Or: Aventurine takes Ratio out on an excursion around Pier Point to spend time together, but it's not a date. Well, it's not supposed to be.

Aventurine, through his now dizzied train of thought, recalls the following:
1: There is a bullet currently lodged into his torso. Two bullets. Several, maybe. He can't tell.
2: He and his partner were separated in the ambush. He has no idea where Ratio is.
3: His only communicator is undoubtedly almost dead.
Coughs leave him as if several consecutive punches to the gut, the free hand not clutching his wound to staunch its bleeding shakily reaching for the troublesome object in question. It sputters out a crackle as Aventurine powers it on, as if a last cry out as it anticipates defeat.
Five minutes of battery left. He's done more with worse odds.
...
Aventurine sends an SOS signal, and the good doctor responds.

Aventurine looked back up to Veritas as he smiled. “See ya, Doc!”
The sound of Ratio’s book snapping shut stopped Aventurine from straightening out.
“Hold on.”
And suddenly, Aventurine felt a large hand grabbing his chin and gently guiding him forward.
A kiss.
A chaste, gentle kiss to the crown of his head. He would’ve missed it if not for the warm hand encompassing his chin. Ratio let go of him just as quickly as he had grabbed him.
“Good luck. Don’t stay out too late.”

It was so easy for Aventurine to lean against Ratio with all of his weight, to allow himself to let the doctor do all of the walking whilst Aventurine stumbled over his own feet. Aventurine realized this at some point, and as far as revelations go, he had to say he hated this one in particular. He rarely let himself get like this, because the last thing he wanted was to be pulled around by the whim of another person without any power to stop it. That was dangerous... and not in a way he liked. Yet he did not feel anything dangerous pressed against Veritas Ratio… and that was a realization he did not care to ruminate on. “I think I’m going to throw up,” Aventurine said.
The doctor sighed tiredly. “Please don’t.”

The blonde laughed breathily, pulling away from their embrace. “I’m asking for you to do that… if you wanted to,” Ratio’s eyes opened wide, finally putting the clues together.
“Doc, you don’t have to, it was just a suggestion if you were up to it. No hard feelings.” Aventurine assured, but Ratio’s hand gently cupped his cheek, stopping him in his thoughts. “I would like to be the one to teach you what it’s like to be cherished and taken care of. I want to show you what it’s like to not be afraid and to accept someone’s help and affection.”

Both praised and scolded for his performance in Penacony, Aventurine re-negotiates his employment. He quits. --- Kind of.
And if there was ever any benefit to the job in the first place, it was the beautiful wonders of money. The excess of material goods he could give away, the games he could play, and the gamble of keeping his relationships as close but as far away as possible. What happens if he tugs on the rope tying together him and Ratio as "coworkers?" What happens if he pulls on that chain that ties him to the IPC? What if, after everything, Kakavasha could do something worthwhile?
OR
Aventurine and Ratio play a game together: how long can they give each other gifts until they have to acknowledge the meaning? How long can they play games with each other's (and their own) feelings before someone loses?
