    Summary

    Dark fantasy oneshots based on Maurice Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit. Gaspard de la nuit was a series of prose poems originally written by Aloysius Bertrand and inspired by various painters such as Rembrant and Callot. Ravel picked three of these poems to compose his infamously difficult piano pieces: Ondine, Le gibet, and Scarbo. These three poems in turn have inspired this series of fics, each following both the poems and the musical works.

    Ondine tells the story of a creature named Ondine, who attempts to lure a man to his death with promises of love but ultimately fails. This is the most fantasy-like, plot-centered, lyrical piece in the series.

    Le gibet tells the story of a hung man from a tree on a hill, while in the background a bell tolls. Unlike Ondine, this piece is more morbid and sombre.

    Scarbo tells the story of a nightmare, a twisted creature that dances in a man's bedroom. This final piece is the most psychologically thrilling and disturbing, meant to evoke heightened emotions of paranoia and fear.

    Shen Jiu growled, wrenching out of Qiu Jianluo’s grip to hurl an ink stone at him. He missed.

    Shen Jiu saw the change in Qiu Jianluo’s face instantly, the man’s hand rising up and blocking out the glow of candlelight. His towering shadow was Qiong Qi given flesh.

    Shen Jiu’s body froze instinctively as he readied himself for a blow.

    But it never came, because when Shen Jiu managed to look up, all he could see was a man’s broad back swathed in black robes, his grip tight around Qiu Jianluo’s wrist.

    “Qiu-gongzi, what could ever make you think that a charlatan like me wouldn’t want this boy as his disciple?”

    Or: Shen Yuan transmigrates into Wu Yanzi’s body and gets followed around by a feral teenager called Shen Jiu… who is kind of obsessed with him.

    Her appetite becomes a myth retold like wildfire. A movement she didn't design, a pedestal she has no desire to stand on. She only wants to exist without notice. She only wants some semblance of safety. An impossibility. Hell is not safe.

    The hotel is her mirror: An aberration, endlessly misinterpreted. It's also her revolving door: An exile she accepts as confirmation of worth, the possibility of attachment so foreign it feels more cruelty than kindness.

    Despite what she is— or perhaps because of it— this sinner still tries to keep her, his shadow a strange mercy that stitches her ragged edges together even as he picks at the threads.

Now his system keeps giving him cat-related missions such as ‘cats must play!’ or ‘all cats purr!’ and even ‘cats often go into heat!’. Ignore that last one, actually.

    So begins Shen Yuan’s balancing act of completing these nonsensical missions, hiding his identity, and staying on the good side of the super tsundere, cat-like man known as Shen Jiu, who keeps saying stuff like ‘I’ll kill you if I find out you’re a demon’.

    TDLR; this whole fic is an elaborate excuse to write catboy!SY going into heat.

    Shortly after escaping the Endless Abyss and joining Huan Hua Palace, Luo Binghe is dismayed to learn that all his plans may come to nothing—Shizun is gone. Disappeared into the ether, not even a year after Luo Binghe’s fall. Luo Binghe refuses to take that as an answer, though. He’ll find Shizun.

    In the meantime, he’ll keep building his reputation as a righteous cultivator at Huan Hua Palace. He’ll deal with the demons under his command, all flocking to him to complain about the assassinations carried out against them in the past months. And he’ll deal with the masked servant of the Old Palace Master who has been foisted upon him: Hua Xunshun.
