The silence that followed was not the sharp, dreaded kind. It was patient. A quiet that waited. Nick shifted on the couch beside him, the worn cushions sighing beneath his weight. His face softened, one eyebrow quirking gently upward. “Yeah?” he murmured, voice tinged with both curiosity and caution. “What would that be?”
Charlie inhaled—deep and shaky, the way one might before diving headfirst into freezing water—and then said it.
“We could… be friends with benefits?”
