Zhu Yuan smiled as she wiped away another tear. "Twenty years, this summer. You will have transferred schools and chosen the empty desk next to me."
She took Miyabi's face in her hand, brushing a thumb against her cheek. "I've treasured every part of that time, Miyabi. And, in the Hollow, while I was trying to get you here, I realized that I... might not have had the chance to say goodbye."
Miyabi took the hand on her face in her own. Her emotions swirled within her, agitated by the closeness of Zhu Yuan. How many times had she been held like this? How many combinations of feelings had they felt towards each other while in this position? Miyabi tried to find clarity within herself by stating the truth. "I'm grateful for you. I don't know how to exist without you. I love you."

Miyabi is 14, and her first kiss is going better than she expected.
While recovering from the foxfire visions, Miyabi and Zhu Yuan have a heart-to-heart that spans fifteen years.
