It’s dark, and Ilya’s not quite sure where he is.
His entire body is numb. His shoes are soaking wet from trudging lazily through the snow. His nose is running, and his lips are chapped.
Selfishly, he wishes Shane would fuss over him now. Pull him close, whisper “I forgive you” even though he shouldn’t, because Ilya would never change, because something inside him- in his family line, in his soul- was broken.
Ilya wondered how long ago it had clicked- when Shane had realized that Ilya wormed his way into this country and tricked the Hollanders into caring for him, then returned the favor by botching their language and leaving a trail of mess in his wake. He still can't help but wonder if that will be part of his punishment- being doomed to miss him in death, too.
or: Ilya’s mostly been able to cope with the fact that he’ll never be able to articulate himself fully in this country- but he’s also never been good at talking about feelings in the first place.
"I'm tired" is the best he's got. It definitely doesn't capture what's going on in his head, and Shane can't read minds.

“If you see the ghost of Granddaddy Egan on the road, don’t you dare tell me about it. I don’t need to know that shit,” Alex quips, broad and light, and he’s facing Bucky with a loose-lipped smile that sits odd beneath the tight pinch of worry around his eyes. It’s a familiar expression.
“It is the snow you must watch for first.” Paulina sets down the tags, and stubs out her cigarette before patting the clump of nickel and sliding the necklace, slow and rasping, across the table towards Bucky. He reaches for it; her fingers are cold to the touch.
“Snow? It’s late for snow, isn’t it?” The scoff in Alex’s tone still has a laugh in it, and despite the vodka and what they’re talking about and what’s waiting for Bucky in the morning, Bucky can’t help but smile at him.
“It is the sign that the dead are coming. Travelers will see the snow, and then the marching corpses. Sometimes, they—” she clicks her fingers sharply, and Bucky’s smile widens— “poof, taken.”
“Taken?” Alex’s skepticism is still delighted, liquor having made him giddy. He laughs louder, and Bucky watches his eyes crinkle, his shining teeth. “What, by the ghosts?”

Saliva’s a coagulant, don’t you remember that?” He takes the yoke—Gale’s chin, fit into the web between Bucky’s thumb and forefinger, because Gale doesn’t ever say don’t when Bucky touches him. “No squirmin’, alright? I’ll be quick,” he repeats for clarity, haunches spread for grounding and getting him closer. Angling, on target, nearer to Gale’s face and not missing how it tilts like half a head shake; not missing how his eyes pitch off into the dark, sights down the muzzled hallway.
Bucky’s gentle, methodical. It’s a hand steadying Gale’s chin, and curling in close, and a long clean lick up the seam burst on his face—skin of an over-ripened plum, soft and surrendering with pre-rot, early ferment splitting it neat and natural and full.
