Summary
A cellar door under a layer of dead leaves conceals the entrance of their hideout. Dae glances around the group, looking out for any of the others passing by. The only things around them are a deer in the distance and rustling leaves in the trees above them. Turning back to his allies, Dae holds his finger to his lips before kneeling down to yank the door open by a rope attached to its handle. He waves his hand in a signal to follow him as he sinks beneath the surface down a sturdy ladder. Blaze glances at Bo uneasily but still follows after Dae into the depths of the earth.

“You don’t have to do it, Lin,” Leo pleads. “You can fight it! I know you can. You’re stronger than it, Lin.”
Lin pants, sweat drenching his clammy body from his shaky hands to his trembling muscles. The bloodlust is debilitating. He needs to kill someone and Leo is right in front of him. It would be so easy to boil his friend alive right here and now. Leo wouldn’t even be able to put up a fight.
Remember when you killed Oak like that? It was so refreshing, wasn’t it? Don’t you want to feel that again? All you have to do is hold your hands out and bring a burning heat to Leo’s body. Do it.

“A?” River calls as she arrives at the entrance to their home of a hollowed-out hill.
When there’s no answer, River grabs the wooden knob on the door, preparing to casually swing it open. Just as she pushes it, she senses A’s life force creeping up behind her. Things start to play out in slow motion. A sharp gust of air pushes against her back, her hand stays tightly gripped on the doorknob, the floor goes out beneath her to reveal a pit with sharp spikes lining the bottom, and River swings to the side. It’s all she can do to latch both hands tightly on the door and throw herself toward solid ground beside the pit. River rolls along the stone floor, banging her back against the packed dirt wall with a thud. Groaning, she looks at the entrance to their home to find A standing there, frustration lacing the lines of her face.

Summary
Bdubs’ and Mumbo’s words ring in Tango’s mind. The theory that Jimmy and the other three in his group had perished will never leave his memories. And the fact that part of Tango believed it is enough to bring bile rising up his throat. His hands tremble as his heart pounds in his chest the same way it did when they were being chased by a platypus-bear a few days ago. He can still see the spirit form of Jimmy flash before his eyes, bringing the longing question of whether or not his best friend was alive. Tango grips his arms so tight that his knuckles turn white. The faint crackling of fire barely makes it past the deep pounding of blood rushing through his ears.
“Tango!” Jimmy’s voice calls distantly. “Oh, my gosh!”

Tango and Jimmy share a look. Tango’s views on this venture are very clear, but Jimmy can’t help himself. He’s always wanted to know what it’s like to ride a sky bison and this is the perfect opportunity. Besides, he’s the avatar. If they get close to dying, he’ll just jump into the avatar state and save them.
“I’m going.” Jimmy says this more to Tango than Grian. “You don’t have to come if you don’t want to.” He smiles and rests a hand on Tango’s shoulder.
The firebender facepalms, running his hand down his face. Taking a deep breath, he nods. “I’m coming, too.”

Joel tuts and shakes his head. “If that water comes out of that waterskin a single centimetre, Scott here won’t have a head anymore.” Pearl freezes, glancing at Scott’s fearful ice blue eyes. Joel gestures to her pouch with his head. “Close it.”
Pearl locks eyes with Scott and he nods ever-so-slightly, wincing as the flaming dagger burns his skin. “Do it, Pearl.” His voice is calm and collected, but Pearl can feel the tension in his muscles and hear the sound of his heart sending out rushing blood.
Pearl growls and reaches down to push the cap back on, sealing the liquid inside. She can’t let Scott die. He’s supposed to be the last one alive. She’d promised to protect him the first day when she gave him one of her lives. The full moon calls to Pearl. She can feel it filling her with power and she knows what she has to do. Maybe this will ruin everything between them, but if it’ll keep him alive…

It’s been a week since avatar Aeor passed away. He was quite old, but his loss sends grief spiking throughout the entirety of the Watchers. Shelby especially feels it since she had been chosen specifically by him nearly five years ago as soon as she had graduated medical school. Aeor had been a kind man with the mission of protecting all those around him regardless of their histories. When he had started the Watchers several decades ago, it had been with only the kindest of intentions and Shelby had been honoured to be a part of it.
Today, it’s been revealed that a new head of the Watchers has been appointed and every worker in the compound has been called to the cafeteria since it’s the largest room to hear their speech. Shelby has no idea who it could be. There were several people within Aeor’s inner circle that might have been put in charge, but no one has heard any whispers of which one stepped forward.

Belanta smiles. “Yes, Grian. You. You display everything they are looking for in their subjects. You would join them to help them get to know the other subjects in a less invasive way and then take part in the test yourself. You could save bending, Grian.”

Tango’s fiery hair flickers and pops, making his anxiety impossible to hide. Silently, Jimmy reaches down and wraps his hand around Tango’s.
Skizz steps closer to Tango, eyes glancing at the open doorway. “Are we ready to go?” His eyes flick to the Ranchers’ hands and up at Tango’s twitching hair.

Summary
The underground base is filled with the warm scent of boiled vegetables and cooked meat as the Scottage trio prepares a stew fit for a king. The clacking sound of a knife connecting with a cutting board as carrots are chopped up into bite size pieces echoes through the cave. Pearl stands at the counter beside Scott while he prepares the vegetables and gently sets apple slices within the pie crust for dessert. Cleo stirs the ladle in front of the stove, moving the stew in a clockwise motion. The meat and some of the vegetables have already been added to the broth; all that’s left is the carrots that Scott is currently finishing up.
A voice that’s been plaguing Scott’s mind ever since the Boogeyman began torturing him whispers in his ear.
Stab her. Cut her. Do it.

Lizzie wraps the water whip around her wrist and yanks her forward, kicking her in the gut when she’s close enough. She falls to the forest floor with a groan. By then, the first woman has pushed herself to her feet, but she doesn’t step into an offensive position nor a defensive one.
Lizzie prepares to attack again until the red-headed woman says, “We know where Joel and Jimmy are.” Lizzie’s hands freeze, the liquid weapon hanging stagnant in the air between them. “And we want your help getting them back.”
“Where are they?” Lizzie gasps, not dropping her defence.

With a sharp inhale, Pearl’s river blue eyes fly open. As soon as her body is in her control again, she slides one foot behind the other in a defensive stance, looking out across the unfamiliar faces around her. They all stumble and raise their hands to the blinding sun. Pearl has to admit that even she is having a tricky time seeing with how bright that ball of fire is. She blinks frantically in an attempt to drive the black dots from her eyes.
A rumbling voice blares from invisible speakers, “Welcome, everyone, to 3rd Life. You have been given three lives. This will go until only one of you remains alive. Good luck.”
A man with brown fringe falling around dark eyes dressed in a red jumper sighs. “Let’s go.” He then turns around and walks into the oak forest surrounding them.

The man unsteadily glances in Bdubs’ direction, but his eyes are unfocused. It’s more like he stares through Bdubs rather than at him. Bdubs waves, but the man turns and continues to stumble further into the swamps. Is this another vision? No, he seems more solid and something tells Bdubs that this is a real person who really needs his help, so he trudges through the mud and moss towards the masked man.

But the voices want what they want. There is only so long one can fight the Watchers.
