    "You should hang out with Peter and me after school!" Ned suggests enthusiastically, then looks to Peter for confirmation. There's a beat that MJ’s body fills with nervous tension, and she’s not sure what she wants his answer to be.  

    "Yeah." Peter agrees, and MJ’s nerves reveal they’d wanted him to say no, and that she’s not ready, and that she should be finding a way out of this development. "You can come if you want. We're not really doing anything, because we don't have anything to do, but..."

    "You're not busy with your internship?" MJ asks without thinking.

    Peter's face turns grey, and he looks almost haunted.

    "No, I...we just got back." He says quietly.

    MJ could kick herself.

    It was the conclusion of an ever-lasting torturous chapter that just wouldn’t end. When the new chapter began, it was somehow even worse.

    Because she was still grieving. She was still mad, and she was still guilty of the heinous crime of feeling.

    The only difference this time was that she was alone.
